About the event

Have an "out of valley experience" this winter while participating in WVRD's Uphill Field trips Outside WV. Glimpse the sport's future while ascending and descending the trails of its storied past here in the White Mountains. Explore the wide winter world beyond Waterville Valley with experienced backcountry skiers; Jen Holloway, Bill Powell, and Tyler Durham. They will share helpful tips about; terrain selection, heat management, uphill travel techniques, downhill strategies, stoke fueling, and much more. These outings will be adventurous affairs in which the group will be meeting the natural conditions of the day. Many trail surfaces may be encountered; packed snow/ice possibly with rocks and roots exposed or covered by fresh snow, frozen ruts created by previous users, slush, or even a foot of glittering fresh powder snow. Turnaround times will be established before heading uphill, and will be adhered too regardless of summit proximity. The goal for these trips is to have a great time skiing uphill and down on great trails, not summiting peaks. Mt Cardigan: As described by David Goodman in his excellent book, "Best Backcountry Skiing in the Northeast" "The slopes of Mount Cardigan continue to offer excellent skiing even after nearly a century. As you swoosh down the Alexandria Ski Trail, picture the person ahead of you on 10 pound hickory skis with cable bindings, bearing down the hill and reveling in this "new" sport called skiing. the fine ski trails of Mount Cardigan provide definitive proof that floating through deep snow down the side of a mountain with spectacular views of the New England countryside is a timeless thrill."
